Sequim weather in June

Dear Sequim Town Blog visitors,
First of all, we are happy to see that more and more people who intend to move to Sequim find us in Google searches. That's great news.

As promised, we want to supply you with useful information about Sequim Life aspects how we experience life in Sequim. Here we go again. One of the biggest concern for our final decision to make our retirement town was the Sequim weather. Coming from warm sunny Hawaii, we were looking for a sunny place in WA state with not too much rain as in Seattle. Believe us we checked each Sequim weather chart about Sequim annual rainfall, monthly precipation and sunny days per year.

The research result about Sequim weather was accommodating our expectations. Bellingham was not an option anymore when comparing the annual rainfall. After living in Sequim for nearly 1 1/2 year we learnt that most of the Sequim weather predictions were quite accurate. The fact that each mile you go from Sequim to the East in the direction to Tacoma or to the West in the direction to Port Angeles increases the rainfall by an inch proved true. We love our Sequim "banana belt", even though our Hawaii friends are kidding us about it. Sequim's unique location in the rainshadow of the Olympic Mountains keep the average annual rainfall in Sequim at only 16 inches.

Why do I mention the Sequim weather in June? I guess it's because nobody told us about the special weather in June, no website and no weather chart did. Last year, we experienced quite a number of sunny days in the spring months. So when June approached, we got all excited because we expected the breakthrough for summer. Actually the opposite happened...June came cloudy and foggy and unfriendly 'nippy'. Doing some plant shopping at a Sequim nursery and mentioning this 'strange' June weather, we heard for the first time that it's always that way in June and we just have to wait till summer shows up in July.

That's what we did. Summer of 2006, especially July, was quite hot but lasted long into October. Great for hiking in the Olympics and RVing in Washington. Well, we made it through our second June in Sequim, which was somewhat better this year so that berries really ripenend earlier. Let's enjoy the summer In Sequim. It's here with sun and blues skies! Aloha Folks
Now in Jul 2011 does it still semm realistic to gain an inch of rainfall for each mile you head east or west?
We are in Portland and still talk about returning to Hawaii but are willing to consider other alternatives as well. Would you return to Hawaii if the opportunity presented itself?

Hi Cliff and Tui,
Thanks for visiting our Sequim blog.

Since you posted your comment in 'Sequim weather in June', let's just refer to June 2011 weather in Sequim. It was definitely 'June Gloom'. Not so much rain but quite a bit of gray clouds and blue holes were rare.

On the other hand, we had the most sunny June last year. There is no guaranty for any weather anywhere. Comparing Sequim weather with other states, Sequim definitely offers a moderate weather without the extremes. That's what counts and what we and Sequim residents love.

Cliff, just like nobody is perfect, 'no place is perfect! When you consider moving back to Hawaii, consider costs of living & electricity, vog and when buying a condo the much higher maintenance fees for condos there.

So, our answer is 'NO', we would not want to leave Sequim and move back to Hawaii.

Last but not least, there is always the option to hibernate for 1 mo. or 2 in some warmer states, catch some sun and vitamin D there.

Happy to talk to you some more about Sequim and Hawaii. You may email us. BTW, we'll have next month our annual Hawaii expats get-together in Sequim. Big fun with hula, Hawaiian music + pot luck, the Hawaiian style!
